Introduction to the Engineering Office
The 1970s was a key period of national development. In the Ten Infrastructure Development Plan, National Freeway No. 1 (Sun Yat Sen Freeway) was one of the priorities. For construction needs, the Engineering Office was set up in August 1973. It was the first engineering office under the management of the Freeway Bureau, located on the 8th and 9th floors of the Taiwan Land Development Memorial Hall (Dunhua S. Rd. Taipei City). The Engineering Office has branch offices of Jinei, Neihu, Bingjiang, Yuanshan, Songjiang, Yangmei, Zhubei, Xinzhu, Toufen, Zaoqiao, and Miaoli, which ware in charge of the supervision duties of each of the sections.
National Freeway No. 1 was completed and opened to the public on October 21, 1978. In December, the original Freeway Engineering Bureau was reorganized into today's Freeway Bureau, in charge of new engineering projects, freeway facility maintenance, traffic management and travel service. In September 1978, the office was relocated to the Taishan Management Center and assigned a new jurisdiction from Jilong to Miaoli, including three branches - Neihu, Zhongli, and Miaoli. After National Freeway No. 1 was opened, and the national economy took off and the number of vehicles in the nation began to increase at an amazing speed. To meet the demand, the office expanded the Sanchong-Taishan branch into eight lanes (completed in 1981) and Linkou-Yangmei section into six lanes (completed in 1987), as well as took over the management of the Taoyuan Airport sub-line. In 1983, the responsibility area of the office was rezoned to Jilong-Xinzhu, covering two branches – Neihu and Zhongli. From 1981 to 1983, the Wugu Interchange, Linkou/Yangmei section expansion, and Badu Interchange projects commenced; to meet requirements, the office set up a new on-location office and the Badu Bridge Office to supervise the progress of the projects. After the projects were completed, the two offices were subsequently closed.
The second freeway - National Freeway No. 3 north section was handed over to the Office for management upon completion. The Guanxi Branch was set up in December 1992 and Muzha Branch in August 1995. The office assumes the maintenance, traffic management, and travel services, for National Freeway No. 3, National Freeway No. 2, National Freeway No. 3A, and National Freeway No. 5 Nangang-Shiding section. To maintain the traffic flow of the freeways, ensure the safety of the road users, prevent accidents, control heavy traffic, and respond to emergency situations, the Taiwan Area National Freeway Bureau set up the North Region Traffic Control Center in 1984 to supervise and manage the traffic control system in the Jilong to Yangmei section. In September 1994, the North Region Traffic Control Center was annexed into the office and became in charge of the traffic control system of the responsibility areas (with the exception of National Freeway No. 3 Jilong-Zhonghe section).
After taking over the newly completed National Freeway No. 5 Shiding-Suao section, the responsibility area of the office was greatly expanded with an increased workload. The office staff continues to provide the best facilities, safest road services, and pleasing landscape. With high value in services, our goal is to provide the most comfortable traveler experiences and high-quality roads.
