Overview
1. History
As the first subsidiary office of the Freeway Bureau, MOTC, the Northern Region Engineer Office is responsible for the maintenance of the facilities, traffic management, and road user services of freeways in northern Taiwan. The Northern Region Engineering Office was established in August 1973 to supervise the construction of the northern section of National Freeway No.1, the first freeway in Taiwan. At that time, there were only 2 engineering branches(Neihu Branch and Zhongli Branch under the Office). In the following decades, the organization of Office was further expanded due to the completion and opening of Freeway No. 2 (1980), the northern section of Freeway No. 3 (1995), and Freeway No. 5 (2004). After the elevated section fo Freeway No.1,the only elevated freeway in Taiwan, opened to traffic in 1997, the Office became the busiest freeway agency with the largest jurisdiction,5 branches and 2 traffic control centers. In order to integrate the construction,maintenance and management of freeways, relevant authorities were integrated into the new Freeway Bureau on February 12, 2018.The Office was renamed the Northern Region Branch Office, tasked with the maintenance and management of freeways in northern Taiwan. Every year the Office maintains 2,886 km of motor lanes, managing the traffic flow and providing roadside assistance to some 30,000 travelers. We will continuously work to provide road users a safe, smooth and comfortable travel experience.
